I had a brilliant conversation today with a Managing Director who is doing a lot of things right in leading the business and organisation. The conversation left me with a lot to think about, and I may write a little more on this.
Anyhow, one of the themes that emerged in our conversation reminded me of something I heard Warren Bennis say at the Linkage Conference on the best of OD and Leadership & Transformational Change Summit in Chicago this year.
Bennis: “A leader should spend 70% of his/her time listening. Then, 20% asking good questions. I wish I could learn to ask better questions.
“Interviewer: “That does not leave much time to get your point across!”
Bennis: “No, the other 10% the leader should invest in reflecting and summarising”
So, leadership is all about the other person!
